Legacy Candidate Site Deprecation FAQs
Last updated: June 5, 2026
The FAQ below addresses questions related to the deprecation of the legacy candidate site.
Why is the legacy candidate site being deprecated?
The legacy candidate site has been in maintenance mode for more than six years and no longer receives security updates.
The image below shows the legacy candidate site.

HackerRank introduced the current candidate site in 2019, and it has served as the default experience since then.
Today, fewer than 0.01% of test attempts use the legacy site. These attempts rely on a small set of outdated question types and test settings that have modern replacements.
Deprecating the legacy site allows HackerRank to focus on improving the current candidate experience, including enhanced security, advanced integrity features, and ongoing feature enhancements.
Who is affected?
A small number of tests that use legacy question types or settings are affected.
If your account is affected, HackerRank sends you a direct email with the list of tests and questions that require migration. You also see an in-product banner on the affected test and question pages.
If you do not receive a notification, your tests already use the current candidate site, and you do not need to take any action.
Why do some tests still use the legacy candidate site?
A test uses the legacy candidate site when it includes one or more legacy settings or question types that are not supported on the current candidate site.
Many of these question types and settings were introduced before HackerRank supported newer development environments and richer assessment experiences. Modern question types, such as Fullstack questions with a VS Code–based IDE, provide a better candidate experience and generate more meaningful evaluation signals.
What happens when candidates try to take a deprecated test?
Starting July 31, 2026, candidates cannot start a deprecated test if they receive an invitation after the invitation block takes effect. Instead, they see a message stating that the test is no longer available and advising them to contact their recruiter for an updated assessment link.
Candidates who receive an invitation before July 31, 2026, can continue to access and complete their test attempt.
How do I migrate affected tests and questions?
Legacy Project questions: Create a new question using Fullstack or Backend question types.
Multi-File HTML/CSS/JS questions: Recreate the question using the single-file HTML/CSS/JS format or the Frontend question type.
HackerRank recommends creating new questions using supported question types instead of updating existing legacy questions.
Can I clone an affected test to preserve it?
No. Starting July 31, 2026, you cannot clone tests that contain deprecated question types or settings. To avoid disruption, migrate affected tests and questions before the deprecation date.
How long do I have to migrate?
Complete all required migrations by June 30, 2026. After this date, deprecated tests become subject to the migration and deprecation timeline.
What if I need help with migration?
Contact support@hackerrank.com for assistance.
To help us investigate more quickly, include the migration notification email you received. The email contains the list of affected tests and questions in your account.
Can I add a legacy question to a test after the deprecation takes effect?
After the deprecation takes effect, you cannot add legacy question types to new or existing tests.
Legacy questions no longer appear as available options when you create or edit a test.
What if I no longer need an affected test?
If you no longer use an affected test, no action is required. HackerRank automatically archives deprecated tests as part of the deprecation process.
If you still need the assessment, we recommend one of the following options:
Create a new test using supported question types.
Direct candidates to a newer test that already exists in your account.
