Quick Start Guide for Developers

You can use HackerRank to manage technical evaluations throughout the hiring process. This guide shows you how to create tests, monitor progress, review results, schedule interviews, manage candidate records, and export reports. Each section links to detailed instructions for the related task.

Note: The features available to you depend on the entitlements assigned by your HackerRank administrator. If you cannot access a feature described in this guide, contact your administrator.

Prerequisites

Before you start using HackerRank, make sure that you:

  • Log in to your HackerRank for Work account

  • You belong to the correct team if your organization uses multiple teams

  • Your account has the required developer permissions. To view the available entitlements for developers, see Available developer entitlements.

Screen

You can use the Tests tab to create tests, configure settings, invite candidates, monitor progress, and review results.

Create a test

You can create a test that evaluates the skills required for a role. You can:

  • Create a role-based test using HackerRank-certified questions

  • Create a custom test tailored to your specific hiring requirements

  • Clone an existing test and reuse its questions and settings

Configure test settings

You can configure the test settings before you publish it. Depending on your permissions and your organization’s configuration, you can manage:

  • Candidate access and onboarding

  • Test duration

  • Question behavior

  • Scoring

  • Time accommodations

  • Integrity settings

  • Invitation settings

Publish a test

You can publish the test to make it available for candidate invitations.

Manage candidates

You can open the candidate list for a test to view each candidate’s profile. The list shows whether a candidate:

  • Has not started the test

  • Is taking the test

  • Has completed the test

  • Has an expired invitation

Review test results

You can use candidate reports to review:

  • Overall score

  • Question-level performance

  • Submitted code

  • AI-assisted plagiarism signals

  • Test integrity signals

  • Candidate activity during the test

Interview

You can use the Interviews tab to create and schedule interviews, assign interviewers, and review interview results.

Schedule interviews

You can start an interview immediately or schedule an interview at a convenient time. When you set up an interview, you can:

  • Assign interviewers

  • Select interview questions

  • Use an interview template

  • Assign a scorecard

Manage interviews

Depending on your permissions, you can:

  • Edit interview details

  • Reschedule an interview

  • Delete an interview

Review interview results

You can use the interview report to review the information captured during the interview. The interview report includes:

  • Interviewer feedback

  • Completed scorecards

  • Interview recordings

  • AI-generated interview insights

  • Candidate responses

Library

You can use the Library to create, find, and manage questions for your tests and interviews.

You can:

  • Browse questions by role

  • Filter by skill, programming language, and difficulty

  • Preview questions before adding them

  • Use company-created questions

Candidate timeline

The candidate timeline provides a chronological view of a candidate’s activity across the platform, including invites, attempts, and cancellations.
